We envision a community with a thriving food system where everyone has equitable access to the food they need and want. We reduce hunger by 1) creating access to high quality, desirable food and other essentials 2) building a responsive regional hunger relief network, and 3) disrupting racism, as food justice is social justice. We believe hunger is unacceptable and are committed to deepening our impact on both the immediate needs of hunger and their root causes in our communities.
The Bellingham Food Bank began over 50 years ago in 1972 as a place where people could find support and food donated by the community. We have changed a lot since then. Challenges presented by COVID and the 2021 floods encouraged us to adapt and create our Drive Through and Home Delivery programs. We expanded our food purchasing model and worked to reduce barriers to accessing our services by adding more hours and culturally relevant foods. We now also serve as a distribution center that collects and sends over 3 million lbs. of food each year to other Whatcom County Food Banks that we collaborate with. We have grown massively in recent years with our numbers more than doubling from 2021 -2022. As we grow and face new challenges, we continue to push our limits to redefine what food banking can mean in Whatcom County and beyond.
